Lesotho Advances Data Governance with Validation Workshop on National Data Management Policy

The Ministry of Information, Communications, Science, Technology and Innovation, in collaboration with AUDA-NEPAD, GIZ, and CIPESA, hosted a one-and-a-half-day validation workshop to align Lesotho’s Data Management Policy with the African Union Data Policy Framework (AUDPF). The event brought together policymakers, stakeholders, and technical experts to review and harmonize national data governance strategies with continental standards.
Speaking at the workshop, Minister Hon. Nthati Moorosi emphasized the strategic importance of data for Lesotho’s digital economy. She said the government aims to develop policies that reflect the country’s unique needs while supporting Africa’s broader vision for data governance. “Data is the new gold of the digital economy,” Minister Moorosi noted. “It drives innovation, business, and informed government decisions. Without proper data governance, we cannot reach our full potential or meet sustainable development goals.”
The workshop highlighted practical benefits of a robust data management policy. Mr Endrin Wanyama, Programme Manager at CIPESA, outlined how effective data governance can improve public service delivery, enhance transparency and accountability, and strengthen communication between citizens and government. He also emphasized the role of data in promoting economic growth, innovation, public trust, and smarter allocation of resources to areas of greatest need.
Participants engaged in discussions to ensure the policy reflects both national priorities and continental standards. The validation workshop aimed to build consensus on Lesotho’s Data Management Policy and provide a clear roadmap for implementation, supporting informed decision-making across government, business, and civil society.
By aligning with the African Union Data Policy Framework, Lesotho positions itself to strengthen digital infrastructure, support innovation, and ensure responsible and secure use of data. The workshop marked a significant step toward creating a data-driven governance model that benefits all citizens.
