Petroleum Fund Lesotho and IDM Launch Nationwide Training Programme for Filling Station Safety and Professionalism

The Petroleum Fund Lesotho has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Institute of Development Management (IDM) to strengthen health and safety protocols for handling petrol and diesel across the country. The initiative includes a nationwide training programme aimed at equipping petrol attendants with the skills and knowledge necessary to operate safely and professionally. In addition, the Fund donated Jerry cans for distribution to 90 filling stations, supporting safer fuel handling practices. The programme reflects a commitment to reducing risks at filling stations while improving customer service and professional standards in the petroleum sector.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Interim Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Fund, Makananelo Kome, explained that the training will focus on the safety of filling station workers. Attendants will learn proper procedures for handling petrol and diesel, risk mitigation, emergency response, and safe storage practices. The training will be delivered in three stages—introductory, intermediate, and advanced—ensuring a comprehensive understanding of operational safety. Kome emphasized the dangers of storing oil in unsafe containers and highlighted that each of the 90 filling stations will have a representative attend the courses sponsored by the Petroleum Fund.

Representing IDM, Mr. Thibelo Molapo said the long-term goal is to develop fully accredited programmes that allow filling stations to recruit staff with recognised qualifications in petroleum handling and customer service. The initiative also addresses environmental responsibility, teaching attendants about spill management, waste control, and compliance with regulatory standards. By following these protocols, the programme reduces the risk of fires, fuel spills, and environmental damage, protecting both workers and surrounding communities.

The training programme also targets customer service and professional conduct. Petrol attendants interact with hundreds of customers daily, making communication skills, ethical behaviour, and accurate guidance critical. Structured learning pathways will transform the role from a low-skill job to a certified profession, offering career advancement opportunities within the petroleum sector, including supervisory and management positions. Accredited qualifications will improve employability and elevate workforce standards across the country.

The Petroleum Fund and IDM stated that the initiative marks a milestone in professional skills development and safety enhancement in Lesotho’s petroleum sector. By combining practical training, safety education, and customer service development, the programme aims to transform filling station operations, ensure compliance with industry standards, and boost public confidence in petroleum retail. The nationwide programme reinforces the importance of structured training, operational excellence, and responsible practices in building a safer, more professional petroleum industry in Lesotho.
