FELETU Calls on Lesotho Government to Honour Court Orders on Chiefs’ Salaries and Health Workers’ Wages

The Federation of Lesotho Trade Unions (FELETU) has raised alarm over the government’s continued failure to implement binding directives issued by the Directorate of Dispute Prevention and Resolution (DDPR) and the Labour Court, particularly relating to the salaries of chiefs and wages of Village Health Workers.
Speaking during a recent interview, FELETU Secretary General Mr. Letsatsi Ntsibolane expressed deep concern over what he described as the government’s disregard for legal obligations. He pointed out that despite clear rulings, including a DDPR order compelling the government to adjust the salaries of traditional leaders, there has been no progress in fulfilling these mandates.
“Government’s refusal to act on the DDPR order is deeply troubling. These are legitimate decisions made by lawful bodies,” Ntsibolane stated. He added that a similar situation has occurred with Village Health Workers, whose minimum wage implementation was ordered by the Labour Court but remains ignored.
Ntsibolane emphasized that these lapses not only undermine the rule of law but also have serious consequences for service delivery at the grassroots level. Chiefs and Village Health Workers are vital in community governance and healthcare provision, and delays in fair compensation disrupt essential services.
“As FELETU, we appeal to the government to implement the agreements and orders of the courts without delay,” Ntsibolane urged. “Arguments and threats will not benefit this country. Only action and respect for the law will ensure stability and progress.”
The union insists that honoring these legal directives is not just a matter of compliance but of justice and social responsibility. With growing frustration among affected workers, FELETU warns that continued inaction could erode public trust and provoke wider unrest.
The call by FELETU reinforces the need for government accountability in upholding labor rights and supporting frontline workers, whose services are crucial to national development and the well-being of Basotho communities.
