Lesotho’s Budget Day: A Reflection on Economic Growth Prospects

Wednesday, February 19, marked a crucial day for Lesotho, as it determined whether the nation is on a path of economic growth or facing stagnation. However, the atmosphere in Parliament was subdued, with members walking in without much enthusiasm or anticipation for the budget presentation.
Unlike previous years when Parliamentarians proudly wore their political party regalia, this year saw a notable shift. Only three members were seen donning their party colors, representing the All Basotho Convention (ABC) and Democratic Congress (DC), while the rest opted for neutral attire. Additionally, some seats in the House remained vacant.
The budget presentation attracted a diverse audience, including development partners, ambassadors, non-governmental organizations, and senior government officials, all eager to witness the fiscal plans for the upcoming year. The media gallery was filled to capacity, with local journalists and reporters covering the event extensively.
Among the opposition leaders present were DC Leader Mr. Mathibeli Mokhothu, ABC Leader Mr. Nkaku Kabi, and Basotho National Party (BNP) Leader Mr. Machesetsa Mofomobe. Notably absent before the session began was government partner Mr. Mothetjoa Metsing.
The 2025/26 budget presentation was delivered by the Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Dr. Rets’elisitsoe Matlanyane, under the theme “Inclusive Growth.” The theme set the tone for discussions on economic policies aimed at fostering development and ensuring that all citizens benefit from national growth initiatives.
