A Global Call to Action on the International Day of Clean Energy

As the world today observes the International Day of Clean Energy, nations have been called upon to embrace a new global era of clean energy, with speed, justice, and collaboration as its guiding principles.

In his official message, United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres highlighted a historic milestone: this year, renewables are expected to become the world’s largest source of electricity generation for the first time. He underscored that the end of the fossil fuel age is inevitable, and the transition to clean energy must accelerate to address the escalating climate crisis.

Mr. Guterres emphasized that this shift must be both rapid and equitable. “Governments must ensure that the transition comes swiftly and fairly,” he stated, stressing the dual need to prevent the worst impacts of the climate crisis while connecting every individual to clean energy. This transition, he added, also holds the potential to lift millions out of poverty by creating sustainable opportunities and infrastructure.

The Secretary-General further noted that achieving these goals requires robust financial support for the renewable energy revolution, particularly in emerging markets and developing economies. He called for an increase in the lending capacity of Multilateral Development Banks and the implementation of measures to address the high cost of capital. Additionally, he urged effective action to tackle debt challenges that often hinder progress in these regions.

This year’s International Day of Clean Energy serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for collective action to secure a sustainable and equitable energy future. As nations reflect on their commitments to clean energy, the call to action is clear: accelerate the transition, ensure fairness, and work collaboratively to address the financial and systemic barriers to achieving a cleaner, greener world.
